AUSTIN – Today, Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) selected State Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) to serve as the Chairman for the House Select Committee on Constitutional Rights and Remedies. The 15-member committee has been formed ahead of the forthcoming Special Session on July 8th and will expire once the 88th Legislative Session convenes in January 2023.
In a press release announcing the newly formed select committee, Speaker Phelan noted “The issues that the Legislature will be tasked with undertaking are by their very nature complex, and a select committee with expanded membership and expertise is the ideal forum for ensuring their thoughtful consideration.” The House Select Committee on Constitutional Rights and Remedies will consider matters pertaining to rights guaranteed under the United States and Texas Constitutions, as well as remedies for any violations of the rights therein.
Phelan added his appreciation for the members of the committee, saying “the members [Phelan has] appointed today bring diverse viewpoints that will greatly benefit the House […]. I am grateful to my friend Trent Ashby for chairing this critical committee. [He] brings the skills and talent necessary to shepherd many of the important issues the House will address during the upcoming special session.”
“During the upcoming Special Session, the Legislature will revisit many of the same issues that were debated earlier this year, such as election integrity and bail reform. Though these critical issues have at times divided members based on their partisan viewpoints, I’m grateful to Speaker Phelan for the opportunity to chair a committee that will seek to build a consensus around protecting the rights afforded to all Texans in both the United States and Texas Constitutions,” said Ashby.
In addition to serving as chair of the newly created Select Committee on Constitutional Rights and Remedies, Ashby will continue serving on the committees he was appointed to during the 87th Legislature. During his time in the Legislature, Ashby has served on a myriad of committees, including the House Committee on Administration, Calendars, Defense & Veteran Affairs, Natural Resources, and Public Education.
Representative Trent Ashby is in his fifth term as a member, currently sits on the House Committees on Appropriations and Transportation and represents a six-county region which includes: Angelina, Houston, Leon, Madison, San Augustine, and Trinity Counties.
