AUSTIN – Today, members of Texas PTA named Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) to Texas PTA’s Legislative Honor Roll for his work during the 85th session of the Texas Legislature.
Representative Ashby serves as the Chairman of the House Appropriations Education Subcommittee, that has the tough task of setting the education budget.
“There were multiple issues affecting funding and school finance this session. Many special interests were fighting over the same dollar and the best way to allocate that dollar to impact the most students,” stated PTA President Lisa Holbrook. “Chairman Ashby and the House Appropriations Subcommittee did their due diligence to send the Senate a budget that significantly increased funding to our public schools.”
Rep. Ashby strongly supports public education in both word and deed, and filed multiple bills to protect funding and address the educational needs of Texas students. Of note, Chairman Ashby carried and passed legislation this session to maintain funding for retired teachers’ health benefits.
“Dating back to my time as a local school board member, I have always prioritized education and advocated for our state’s schoolchildren,” stated Ashby. “The future of Texas rests on the education our children receive in the classroom and they deserve every opportunity to be successful, regardless of their zip code. Receiving this award, from an organization with a mission such as Texas PTA’s, is a great honor.”
In October 2009, the Texas PTA Legislative Action Committee created the Texas Legislative Honor Roll to recognize elected or appointed officials at the state level who support the Texas PTA legislative agenda. Criteria for selection include:
- An elected or appointed official at the state level;
- Strong advocate for children’s issues;
- Supporter of legislation or actions that benefit children and youth; and
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to one or more priorities on Texas PTA’s legislative agenda.
Individuals recognized for the Texas PTA Honor Roll demonstrate initiative to enhance the quality of life for children and youth, improve the quality of education for all children and youth, strengthen families, improve child safety standards, show support for children, youth, families and PTA-related positions and lend support to a current Texas PTA legislative priority.
Texas PTA is the largest grassroots organization in Texas with half a million members – parents, teachers and others who have a special interest in children, youth, families and schools. Texas PTA is a noncommercial, nonsectarian-nonpartisan organization that does not endorse any candidate or political party.
