After prayerful consideration and discussion with his family, State Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) has officially announced he will file for re-election and seek another term as the State Representative for House District 57.
“It is indeed a tremendous honor to represent the fine folks who are blessed to call this area home,” Ashby stated. “Throughout my tenure in the Legislature, I have worked hard to make real progress on the issues that matter and are important to East Texans.”
During the 85th Legislative Session, Rep. Ashby helped advance conservative legislation, such as the abolishment of partial birth abortion and limiting state regulations on business. As a third-term member of the House Appropriations Committee, Ashby played a major role in crafting a budget that wisely invests taxpayer dollars in a fiscally prudent manner, despite revenue challenges and increases in both population and inflation.
In his most recent session, Ashby passed 12 bills that were later signed into law. Most notably, Rep. Ashby authored the bill that preserved the continuation of our state’s healthcare plan for retired educators, while also providing additional funds to help alleviate the financial burden for every participant in the plan.
“While this session had a number of challenges, I’m proud of the work we were able to accomplish,” Ashby said. “As our state continues to grow, it is more important than ever that legislators representing rural areas maintain a strong voice that speaks to the values and beliefs which are so critical to preserving our way of life.”
Rep. Ashby garnered several awards during the 85th Legislative Session, such as Deep East Texas Legislator of the Year, Effective Conservative by the Conservative Roundtable of Texas, and the Micah 6:8 Justice Award, given by the Christian Life Commission, for his effective and principled leadership. In addition, Ashby was appointed as one of five House conferees on the state budget, where he played a major role in securing adequate public and higher education funding, as well as providing additional resources for local law enforcement and first responders.
“Should I be given an opportunity to serve another term, my focus will be on continuing to provide exceptional constituent service and representation that reflects the highest moral and ethical standards,” Ashby commented. “As a public servant, I never forget who I’m working for and my highest priority will always be to serve as an effective representative for the people who have entrusted me to be their voice in the Texas House.”
Representative Ashby is the State Representative for House District 57, which encompasses all of Angelina, Houston, Leon, Madison, San Augustine, and Trinity Counties. He lives in Lufkin with his family, where he serves as the Angelina County Chairman for Citizens National Bank.
